The place where we read should be comfortable, healthy and stimulating our productivity. Lighting is a key element of the space that we must pay great attention to. In addition to the fact that lighting affects our productivity, it also affects the health of our eyes. Students spend a lot of time in their day reading, and most of the time is under artificial light. Choosing the most appropriate type of lighting for the home reading area is one of the biggest concerns for parents.
Start with the right place of the office
Ideally design the study area in a place of the house where there is as much natural light as possible. It is the best light for eye health. The desk should be next to a window so that light can come in from the opposite side of the hand that writes. Or sit in front of the window. Make sure your computer screen does not shade on your desk. It is a bad idea to sit with your back to a window because there will be a lot of reflection on your computer screen and it will hurt your eyes.
If you are not able to put the desk next to a window or there is no natural light during study hours, the task lighting will give you the solution. There are 3 types:
The floor lamp has one major advantage, it does not take up space on any surface, so you can save space on the desk. It also allows you to briefly leave the office and sit on a chair under the lamp for more relaxed reading. Δεν κάνουν όλα τα φωτιστικά δαπέδου για μελέτη. Not all floor lamps are suitable for study. Most of them are intended for ambient lighting and diffuse light instead of directing it to a specific spot. Lampshades are also inappropriate because light loses its intensity and we get tired after a few hours of reading. If you want to put on a textile or plastic lamp shade, make sure it does not diffuse light and has a neutral color. You need clear light without shades for comfortable reading. The best floor lamps have an adjustable structure and you can adjust the height and direction of the light to suit your needs.
Table lamps are the most popular for students because they are practical, compact and easy to move around. Look for fixtures that have split joints and dimmed luminosity.
Wall sconces are the least flexible, so it is not recommended to use them as a primary light source. However it is a great solution if you have limited space and your office is near a wall.
There are wall lamps that can be adjusted or have a flexible arm and send directional lighting suitable for work.
The quality of task lighting is critical, but ceiling lighting is also important. The ceiling lamp should be bright enough to make as little contrast as possible with the light in the study area. However, do not decide to take as many Lumens as you need to study from the ceiling light, as it will not be efficient. Around 300 lumens per square meter is enough.
The type of lamp is just as important. For comfortable ambience choose LED lamps in daylight or warm white. According to ophthalmologists, the color of light is less important than brightness. The choice between yellow or white is a matter of preference and depends on the purpose of the reading.
Yellow is more relaxing so it’s better for leisure reading.
White is more vibrant and stimulates concentration and activation, so it is more suitable for study.
